Despite Barrowman’s shock at Captain Jack’s longevity, Torchwood creator Russell T Davies wasn’t entirely shocked that the character has stuck around so long.
“You can never predict that kind of thing, but when you meet John Barrowman, you kind of realize you’re never going to get rid of him. You’re in for life!” Davies says, laughing. “We did very quickly realize that we were onto something extraordinary. It was a magical chemistry between actor and role. It happens very rarely, and we’re the ones who leapt on that and created Torchwood. We did our jobs very, very well.”
